Fine Woodworking: Introduction to Precision Woodworking and Joinery WINTER

Description: In the process of building a table-top wine rack, learn everything you need to know to create beautiful fine furniture from selecting rough sawn boards from a mill to applying a final clear coat. We will learn how to read the grain on a board, mill a rough board to perfect dimensions, chop a mortise by hand and cut a perfect tenon on the table saw. We will learn the differences in different wood glues, as well as how to select an appropriate finish.   The class is intended for all skill levels. For beginner students, you will learn how to safely operate basic shop machinery and how to care for tools and equipment. You will also learn the basics of woodworking with hand tools by hand chopping a mortise and fitting a finger joint. Intermediate and advanced students will create the same table top wine rack, but with advanced joinery techniques. Advanced students will have the opportunity to use an advanced joinery technique, such as wedged tenon, half lapped finger joint, or drawbore tenon. Included in the price are: Your choice of fine hardwood including black walnut, black cherry, and hard maple 1/2 inch professional woodworking chisel wooden mallet You will take these tools, and the knoweldge to use them, home with you. Class Goals: Students will go through the the process of building their counter-top wine rack, in doing so learning how to safely operate a jointer, planer, miter saw, and table saw; how to use a tenoning jig; how to hand cut a mortise, how to assemble your project, how to sand a project, and how to apply a wood finish.  Prerequisites: No previous experience required. Students must be at least 18 years old. What to Bring: Students should wear shop appropriate clothes – closed-toe shoes, no dangly jewelry or straps, and long hair should be tied back. Instructor Biography: Matthew P. Thomas grew up on a farm in central Indiana where he was constantly creating with his hands, whether it was art, music or framing a barn window broken by a fallen tree. Matthew began woodworking over 10 years ago when he discovered a stack of fine hardwoods in the haymow of the barn. Since then, he has has grown into a artist focusing on fine furniture that blurs the line of sculpture. Matthew has spent time working as a bartender, web designer and a lawyer, but his passion has always been music and art which he now pursues as a full-time career at the Artisan's Asylum.
